Did you know West Delaware High School students could obtain their Welding (GMAW) Career Pathway Certificate by the time they graduated high school? West Delaware and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) offer several dual credit welding courses taught at the high school by instructor, Seth Harms. The classes include Blue Print Reading; Intro to Welding, Safety & Health of Welders; Basic Arc Welding (SMAW); Basic Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW); and Flame/Plasma Cutting Fundamentals. Credits earned from completing these classes can be applied toward obtaining a Welding (GMAW) Career Pathway Certificate or a one-year Welding diploma with NICC. Graduates with this Career Pathway Certificate are workforce-ready upon high school graduation.
In addition, students have the option of obtaining their Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) Quality Practices and Measurements (#51297) certification. This national certification is the gold standard for front-line industrial training. The next class begins on Oct. 3 at the UIU/NICC Manchester Regional Education Partnership Center.
Students who are enrolled in the Northeast Iowa Career Learning Link program by December of their junior year can take the MSSC Quality Practices and Measurements course at no cost. Northeast Iowa Career Learning Link is a program at the college that exposes students to high-demand career areas and sets them on the pathway to career and education success. Benefits of this program include cost savings for students and parents, working with a Career Coach to find the right post-graduation plan for them, as well as the opportunity to participate in a nationally-recognized, highly visible U.S. Department of Labor grant that showcases great students in northeast Iowa.
