Welcome to West Delaware Middle School

Hello Hawk Fans!

West Delaware is a great place to be!  I am so excited to join your team here in Manchester!  The staff has been very welcoming, and taking time out of their summer to stop in and say hello.  What a dedicated staff we have here!  They are going to be great to work with, and I am excited to get to know each of them better.

A little bit about myself.  I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1992 with a BA in Secondary Mathematics Education.  My first teaching position was in Burlington, CO at the middle school where I taught 6-8 Math and Computer Science.  After 3 years, my wife and I moved to Riverside, Iowa where I taught high school and middle school mathematics at Mid-Prairie.  I was also the varsity wrestling coach at M-P.  In 2004, I stepped away from teaching for 1 year, to accept a position at ACT, inc. in Iowa City as a Mathematics Test Consultant and Classroom Advisor. The position at ACT reminded me how much I love being in the school system.  So, in 2005, I accepted a position at Western Dubuque as the 7-12 Athletic Director.  In 2011, I transferred to Drexler Middle/Intermediate School (in the Western Dubuque system) as the assistant principal. And know, I am fortunate enough to be at West Delaware!

I look forward to getting to know all of the students and parents, and am excited for school to start!  To turn our attention to our school, one of our building goals this year focuses around “Building Relationships”.  You should be hearing your students talking about PBIS and digital citizenship in support of this goal.  Our second building goal focuses around “Challenging Academics”.  With this goal, staff will be working on delivering 21st Century Skills, differentiation, and learning labs to our students.  Two very good, and lofty goals, that were created by our building leadership team.

If you would like more information on any of this, please let me know.  Thank you for all that you do!  I am very excited to be here!

Go Hawks!

Welcome to West Delaware Middle School housing approximately 450 students in the 5th through 8th grade. We have a dedicated team of teachers and support staff, committed to providing a focus on relationships, challenging academics, and 21st century skills. Our staff and students value the support of families, the dedication of our volunteers, and the resources provided by our community.

We are very proud to be a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports) school. PBIS is a framework that is designed to enhance academic and social behavior outcomes for all students by (a) emphasizing the use of data for making decisions; and (b) organizing resources and systems to improve implementation (TA Center of Positive Behavior Supports).

It is our goal to provide a safe and effective learning environment that meets the needs of all middle school age students. These attributes include an education that is; (a) developmentally responsive, (b) challenging, (c) empowering, and  (d) equitable.
